DANIELS, W.Va. - - The Wilmington University golf team put themselves in a position to advance to another NCAA Division II National Tournament with a 300 (+12) on Tuesday in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Regional Tournament at The Resort at Glad Spring Cobb Course.
The Wildcats moved into sole possession of fourth place on Tuesday, tallying a two-day score of 304-300 for a 604 (+28) after two rounds of play. The Wildcats are vying for one of four team spots into the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
St. Thomas Aquinas tied for the best round of the day with a 296, moving into first place with a 597 (+21) two-round score. Dominican shot a 298 on Tuesday for a two-round score of 598 (+22) to sit in second place while Le Moyne moved up two spots with a 298 on Tuesday for a 602 (+26) two-round score to round out the Top 3.
Zac Moore paced the Wildcats on Tuesday with a 74 (+2), shooting his first nine holes (the back nine) at 34 (-2). HE collected two birdies and seven pars in his first nine holes. Four bogeys on the front nine brought him in at 74 (+2) for the day. He is in a tie for 15th overall in the tournament.
Ryan Rucinski had a solid finish for the Wildcats, finishing the front nine with a 35 (-1). After birdieing the first hole (10th of the day), the sophomore finished his round with eighth consecutive pars to close the round with a 75 (+3). He leads the Wildcats by sitting in a tie for 12th overall with a two round score of 73-75 for a 148 (+4).
Senior Sam Clark also posted a 75 (+3) for the Wildcats on Tuesday, improving by three strokes from Monday afternoon. Clark birdied the par-five 12th before bogeying the 13th hole. He finished his first nine holes at even par, 36. Clark birdied the par three-third hole but finished with a 39 (+3) on the front nine to come in at 75 (+3). He is in a tie for 37th overall with a 78-75 for a 153 (+9).
Freshman Braden McKay and senior Miguel Siercke each scored a 76 (+4) on Tuesday. After four bogeys on the back nine, McKay made the turn and sank four straight pars before birdieing the par-five fifth hole A bogey on nine closed his round with a 76 (+4). He is in a tie for 65th overall with an 81-76 for a 157 (+13).
Siercke is in a tie for 43rd overall after two rounds, closing his round by birdieing the par-four eighth but bogeyed the final hole of the day to close out his 76 (+4). He has shot a 78-76 for a 154 (+10).
Mercyhurst's Chris Kupniewski shot a 73 to take over sole possession of first place after two rounds, posting a 69-73 for a 142 (-2). He is the only payer under par after two rounds. Le Moyne's John Clare, Dominican's Hunter Wescott, and Virginia Union's Allen Day are tied for second with a two-day score of 146 (+2).
With their fourth place standing, the Wildcats will tee off at 12:00 p.m. in the third and final round on Wednesday. The Wildcats are paired with Indiana (Pa.) and Mercyhurst. Wilmington leads Indiana by two strokes and Mercyhurst by four strokes for the fourth and final berth into NCAA Division II National Tournament.
