BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University softball team snapped a five-game losing skid with a sweep of LIU Post, 5-3 and 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
The Wildcats (13-10) collected 22 hits on the afternoon, coming back from being swept on Saturday afternoon with only six hits combined. LIU Post, who routinely is in the NCAA East Regional Tournament as well, falls to 7-9 with the two losses.
It was the Wildcats that jumped out to an early lead in the opener, scoring the game's first five runs. Danielle Bradley started the Wildcat scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first, scoring Rosa'Lynn Burton who reached on an error with two outs and the bases empty.
The Wildcats extended the lead with three runs in the third inning, starting with a leadoff double from Whitney DeMora. An error on a bunt brought DeMora across before Burton added an RBI double to score Jazmeen Llamas. Bradley added another RBI groundout, putting the Wildcats ahead, 4-0.
Kaitlyn Slater started the fourth with a leadoff double and the Wildcats had runners second and third with one out. DeMora made it 5-0 Wilmington with another RBI groundout.
LIU Post got on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, but Caitlyn Whiteside help the Pioneers in check for most of the game. They would later add a two-run homer in the sixth, and put the leadoff man on in the bottom of the seventh before Whiteside closed out the win.
Nine different Wildcats collected one hit in the game with Bradley leading the way with two RBI. Whiteside moved to 8-4 on the season with the win, scattering six hits but not allowing a walk.
The nightcap was a different story, as the Wildcats needed to comeback from an early deficit. LIU Post came out and put three on the board in the bottom of the first inning before the Wildcats battled back.
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the second inning, but then scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to earn the comeback.
Bradley doubled home Burton to start the scoring in the third and Colby Wyatt followed with a game-tying RBI single to right center, 3-3.
Llamas tripled in DeMora in the fourth inning before Burton put the Wildcats up, 5-3, with an RBI single. An error following a Slate single allowed Bradley to score before Mirabella Klebart put the Wildcats up, 7-3, with an RBI groundout in the fifth. Wyatt then capped the Wildcats scoring with a two-run double to center in the sixth, bringing in Bradley and Meghan Brown.
Bradley went the distance in the circle for the Wildcats, keeping the Pioneers at bay after allowing three runs in the first inning. LIU Post didn't score again until bottom of the fifth inning before Wyatt put the game away with her two-run double in the sixth. Bradley is now 4-4 on the season with the win.
Burton, Bradley, Wyatt, Slater, and Velasquez each collected two hits in the nightcap, led by Wyatt's three RBI and Bradley's three runs scored.
After eight games last week, the Wildcats have a few days off before heading to Holy Family on Wednesday for another Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. First pitch in Philadelphia is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
