BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University softball team made it nine in a row on Monday afternoon, sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Bloomfield, 6-2 and 6-1, at Clarks Pond South.
Since the calendar turned to April, the Wildcats (22-13, 10-6 CACC) have only lost one game, extending their winning streak to nine straight games with a sweep at Bloomfield (13-10, 4-8 CACC). The Wildcats scored two runs in three separate innings in the opener before started the nightcap with a four-run first inning to take charge.
But it was Danielle Bradley that started the scoring in the top of the first, singling home Rosa'Lynn Burton. Colby Wyatt then put the Wildcats up 2-0 with a sacrifice bunt, bringing in Jazmeen Llamas.
But the Bears were able to eventually tie the game with single runs in the first and third innings before the Wildcats' offense came to live again in the fifth. With two outs and the bases empty, Brown singled up the middle to allow Klebart to hit a two run homer to center field, putting the Wildcats up, 4-2.
Brown than started the top of the seventh with a double to left center, putting runners on second and third. An error then brought in both runners, as Kaitlyn Slater laid down a bunt for the squeeze play.
Brooklyn Lachette relieved starter Caitlyn Whiteside to start the top of the third inning and pitched the final five frames for the win. She allowed one unearned run on four hits to improve to 3-2 on the year.
The offense started early for the Wildcats in the nightcap, starting with four runs in the top of the first to set the tone. Burton led off the game with a bunt single before stealing second. Llamas then singled to left field and came home on an error which allowed Llamas to get to third.
Bradley then squeezed home Llamas for the 2-0 lead before Klebart singled home Wyatt for another RBI. Slater rounded out the scoring in the top of the first with a sac fly to right, deep enough to score Brown from third.
Brown again singled with one out in the fifth and came home as Slater doubled to put the Wildcats up 5-1 after five innings. Brown then capped her afternoon with a solo shot to right field in the top of the seventh, giving the Wildcats a 6-1 lead.
Game two starter Danielle Bradley only allowed a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first before shutting down the Bears. She struck out five while allowing six hits and four walks to improve to 7-5 on the year.
Brown went 7-for-8 with a double and home run, five runs scored and an RBI in the doubleheader while Klebart batted 5-for-9 with a home run, three RBI, and one run scored for the day.
The Wildcats will put their nine-game win streak on the line on Wednesday when they return to action at Asbury Field. They will welcome crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom for another CACC doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 2:30 p.m.
