NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The pitching combination of Wilmington University baseball's Sean Deely and Chuck Delagol shut down the University of the Sciences on Wednesday afternoon, as the Wildcats swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division doubleheader, 7-0 and 6-0, at Wilson Field.
Sean Deely went eight innings of the nine-inning ball game in the opener, striking out 14 while only allowing two hits to start the momentum. Chuck Delagol came on and tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout in the nightcap, allowing four hits in the win.
Sean Deely struck out the side in the top of the first and top of the third innings in the opener as the junior waited for the offense to catch up.
With two outs and Brooks Ryan on second, the Wildcats got on the board on a dropped fly ball off the bat from Christian Adorno. Adorno made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Gage Walklett from third.
Continuing to penny the Devils, the Wildcats tacked on another single run in the bottom of the sixth as Nick Macey laced a double to left center to plate Kendall Small. Max Carney made it 4-0 in favor of the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh, hitting an RBI single to right to score Adorno.
With Deely still cruising in the top half of innings, the Wildcats put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on second and third, Dakota Graham hit a double inside the left field line to score two. Graham would late come home on an error on the catcher, as Graham was caught off third on a missed sign.
Deely was down after eight full innings, but Zach Frederick came on and induced three ground balls to close out the victory.
Not to be out-done on the mound, Chuck Delagol went out and worked quickly in game two setting the Devils down in order in the top of the first. It didn't take as long for the offense to get going, as they scored on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning.
Brooks Ryan led off the bottom of the first and took a high fastball to right field, clearing the fence for his fourth homer of the season. With runners on first and third in the bottom of the second, a double steal put the Wildcats up 2-0 as Frank Nigro swiped home.
The Devils threatened in the top of the fifth with back-to-back two-out singles. But Delagol worked his way out of it with a fly ball to left to end the frame.
After two quick outs in the top of the seventh, the Devils put two runners on with a bunt single and a walk, but Delagol finished off the complete game shutout with a fly ball to right field.
The Wildcats are on the road both days this weekend, as they first head to crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom on Friday afternoon before heading to Bloomfield on Saturday. The first pitch of both CACC doubleheaders will be at 12:00 p.m. this weekend.
