ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - - The Wilmington University golf team closed out its first tournament of the 2018-19 season with a 303 in the final round on Tuesday at the Ninth Annual Jay Jennison Cup at the World Golf Village Slammer & Squire Course hosted by Flagler University.
The Wildcats posted team scores of 301-310-303 for a 914 (+50) to finish 14th out of 15 teams at the tournament. Barry University set a new tournament record with a three round score of 830 (-34), previously held by West Florida in 2015 (852).
Newcomer Arvy Shongwe paced the Wildcats in the final round with a 74 (+2), closing out the tournament with an 84-75-74 for a 233 (+17). Junior Braden McKay was the low finisher for the Wildcats, shooting a 224 (+8) and in a tie for 44th overall. He shot a 73-76-75 for his 224.
Matthew Kettleson also scored for the Wildcats on Tuesday, posting a 76 to complete his 235 (+19) and in a tie for 76th. He shot a 77-82-76 through the tournament.
Ryan Rucinski was the fourth scorer for the Wildcats on Tuesday, shooting a 78 to finish with a 237 (+21) for the tournament. His three round score of 78-81-78 put him in a tie for 81st overall.
Rounding out the Wildcats on the course on Tuesday was junior Jack Dixon, as he was the second lowest Wildcat for the tournament. He posted scores of 73-78-81 for a 232 (+16), coming in a tie for 68th overall.
Barry's Jorge Garcia set an individual 54-hole tournament record with a 204 (-14), posting identical rounds of 68-68-68 to beat the field by five strokes.
The Wildcats are back in action when they host the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship this weekend at Deerfield Golf Course. They will be looking for their ninth straight CACC Championship when the tournament starts on Sunday. A champion will be crowned on Monday afternoon.
