Men’s Basketball Alum Nick Richards Getting Comfortable in Professional Ball, Playing for the Reading Rockets

NEWARK, Del. - - With the beginning of his dreams realized, former Wilmington University men's basketball standout Nick Richards is settling into his roll with the Reading Rockets, a professional team out of the National Basketball League in England.

Since graduating, Nick Richards (2016-18) had his sights set on playing professionally, either in the United States or abroad. It didn't come easily though, as the timing in his first summer following college athletics did not work out for the 6-4 guard from New Castle.

This past summer, he joined the Heinrich Sports Agency and it didn't take long for him to find a home.

"I'm excited to get to Reading and play under Coach Alan along with the rest of the coaching staff," Richards told the Reading public relations staff after his signing in August. "This should be an interesting season as we hope to accomplish the main goal of winning a championship. I can't wait to come in and compete with the rest of the team and even more excited to join the Rockets, meet our fans, and overall see what Reading has to offer! Get ready for a great and exciting season!"

Richards started his collegiate career at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a successful high school campaign at Hodgson Vo-Tech. He helped lead his team to a NJCAA Division II National Championship as a sophomore, and then transferred back home to finish his collegiate career with head coach Dan Burke and Wilmington University.

He made his mark from the get-go in the Green and White, earning All-CACC honors in both seasons.

"Coach Burke instilled a lot of confidence in myself and in my game," said Richards of his time here at Wilmington. "The type of system we played allowed me to play my game and grow as a player. I ended up playing a lot of minutes here and that has led to more opportunities."

Reading is located 45 miles west of London and plays their home games in the Rivermead Leisure Complex and Gym. Richards is trying to help the Rockets to a Division I Championship for the first time since the 2013-14 season. The season began and this month and will run through March.
