NORFOLK, Va. - - Tied at nine, Montevallo used a 4-1 fourth quarter to overtake the Wilmington University men's lacrosse team, 13-10, on Saturday afternoon at the Norfolk Collegiate School.
The Wildcats (1-4) used a 4-1 advantage in the second quarter to hold a 6-5 lead at the halftime break. Chris Smith scored the final three goals of the quarter, the last on the man advantage to lead the Wildcats into the break, 6-5.
But Montevallo (6-3) answered by starting the third quarter with three of the first four goals, taking an 8-7 lead. Josh Burley drew the game even with a goal from John Novak but the Falcons had an answer once again to take a 9-8 lead. Dylan McCleaft scored the final goal of the quarter to send the game into the fourth quarter all square at 9-9.
The Wildcats couldn't find a stop to the Falcon attack in the final frame, as Montevallo scored the first three goals of the quarter. Josh Burley ended the Wildcat draught, but it was too little too late as Montevallo capped the scoring with another goal and the 13-10 victory.
Chris Smith led the Wildcats with a season high four goals on the afternoon. McCleaft chipped in with three goals on five shots while Burley was the only other Wildcat to score multiple goals with two. Cory Melvin rounded out the Wildcats scoring, putting in one goal to go along with one assist.
The Wildcats couldn't stop the two-head monster of the Falcons attack, led by Kyle Nichols' six goals and two assists. Thomas Vaesen added five goals for the Falcons as well.
Burley finished 8-of-16 in the face-off circle for the Wildcats, adding seven ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Kyle Leary and John Novak led the team with three caused turnovers each. Noah Given made five saves in goal in the loss.
The Wildcats take their first road trip this week, as they are off to West Virginia for a pair of games. They will play at Alderson Broaddus in Philippi, W.Va., on Tuesday and head to Davis & Elkins in Elkins, W.Va., on Thursday.
