NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team used two second half goals to secure the crosstown Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup, 2-0, over Goldey-Beacom at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Goldey-Beacom (4-3, 2-2 CACC) put two shots on goal in the first half, but could not find the back of the net against the Cats goal tender Vinny Tasca who made two saves. The Wildcats (3-2-2, 3-1 CACC) did not take a shot on goal in first half, and the half would end just the way it started in a 0-0 tie.
The Lightning had two chances to get on the board in the first half, first on a header by junior midfielder Chahin Aghrim in the sixth minute, but Wildcat goaltender Vinny Tasca made a diving save. Their second chance came in the 38th minute on a header by senior forward Lorenza Gama but was once again turned away by Tasca.
In the second half, the Wildcats got the scoring started by using a set piece that ended the scoring drought in the 47th minute. Ben Jordan scored his second goal of the season off a header from Fredrik Bentdal, his first assist of the year, to take the early lead 1-0 in the second half. Bentdal sent a corner kick to the back post, finding Jordan wide open.
Bentdal didn't stop there, as in the 56th minute he ripped a free kick shot forcing the Lightning goalkeeper to leave his feet to make the save. Lorne Bickley was there to clean up the rebound as he heel kicked it in for his seventh goal of the season, which put the Cats up for good.
The Lightning would put three shots on goal in the second half, but they would fail to figure out Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca. Tasca saved all five of the Lightning's shots on goal to seal the victory for the Cats. It is Tasca's second shutout of the season.
The Wilmington University men's soccer team will now take to the road for their next three games. They will first travel to Nyack College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on Saturday September 23rd, first kick is slated for 3:00 p.m.
