NEWARK, Del. – For the third straight game, the Wilmington University men's soccer team has scored six or more goals including Saturday afternoon's 8-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Nyack at the WU Athletic Complex.
In a physical game, the Wildcats (5-0-3, 3-0-1 CACC) stayed composed scoring eight goals during the match. Fredrik Bendtal got it started in the fifth minute on a free kick that deflected off a defender in the wall inside the box. Tom Garratt gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, before Dominic Folarin scored on an assist from Will Stone three minutes later for the commanding 3-0 lead.
Nyack got on the board before the half however, thanks to Joshua Schliesing, but it would not be enough as the Wildcats scored five unanswered goals in the second half to take the 8-1 victory.
Tom Garratt scored three goals to give himself the hat trick, including two goals that came off of penalty kicks. Fredrik Bendtal scored twice along with Dominic Folarin, who scored his first goal of the season in the 26th minute. Will Stone had two assists in the game giving him his eighth and ninth assists of the season, which leads the CACC
Wilmington had 21 shots to Nyack's seven, with 11 shots on goal. Nyack was issued five yellow card warnings, while WilmU was issued two. Both teams played physical as there were a total of 46 fouls called during the game.
Up next, the Wildcats have back-to-back home games including Tuesday afternoon against Holy Family at 4:00 p.m., and Saturday afternoon against Concordia for a 3:00 p.m. start time to conclude the 2018 Homecoming Weekend.
