LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - It may have taken longer than the Wilmington University softball team would have liked, having to come back on Friday morning to finish off Bloomfield, 10-5, but the team continues in the winner's bracket of the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.
For the third year in a row the Wildcats have gone 2-0 in their first two games of the CACC Tournament, winning it all in 2014 before eventually falling in both games on Friday in 2015. The Wildcats hope to repeat their journey from 2014.
In the continuation game on Friday morning, the third seeded Wildcats led the seventh seeded Bears, 9-5, in the bottom of the sixth with one out and a runner on third. Danielle Bradley took the first pitch she saw on Friday morning and laid down an squeeze bunt to first base. Cambria Ziemba went racing home from third and slid under the tag with an excellent back-door, head first slide to increase the lead to 10-5.
Brooklyn Lachette, who started the game on Thursday, was taken out, but then came back in late in the game on Thursday, wasted no time in the top of the seventh to shut the door. She picked up a strikeout, a grounder, and a liner to end the game.
In going 1-for-2 against Bloomfield, Ziemba is now three hits away from reaching the 200-hit plateau and tying the program's career hit record. Taylor Rizzotte and Bradley each collected two hits in the game for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats continue on to play fourth seeded Holy Family in the winner's bracket game on Friday at 1 p.m. The winner moves onto the championship round on Saturday.
