PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University softball team was able to defeat Chestnut Hill, 2-0, in game one of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader before the rains came and postponed came two in the bottom of the third on Friday afternoon at the CHC Softball Field.
All game one starter Makayla McCarthy needed was a two-run third inning in the opener, as the Wildcats (15-10, 3-2 CACC) shut out the Griffins (0-10, 0-3 CACC).
Makayla McCarthy didn't allow a base runner until the fifth inning, striking out the side in the second and third innings. By the time she allowed a two-out double in the fifth, the Wildcats already had a 2-0 lead.
With two outs and the bases empty, Alyssa Velasquez started a rally with an infield single. Lauren Lopez put runners on second and third with a single to right and advancing on the throw. Annie Davila, fresh off a three home run day on Wednesday, brought in both runners with a single into center field to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
That was all McCarthy needed, as she left a runner on third in the fifth, set the Griffins down in order in the sixth, and struck out the final two batters in the seventh, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.
Makayla McCarthy improved to 7-6 on the year with the complete game shutout, striking out a season high 14 batters while only allowing three hits and one free pass. It is her second complete game shutout of the season, and now has 87 strikeouts to only 19 walks on the year.
Davila went 2-for-2 with two RBI while Lauren Lopez was the only other Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Velasquez and Lexi Baughman picked up the other two hits for the Wildcats.
A date and time to make up game two of the doubleheader has not been announced as of Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats return to action after Easter Weekend, hosting Holy Family on Tuesday at Asbury Field. The first pitch of the CACC doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
