Wildcats Get Two Against Wheeling Jesuit and Stonehill as They Win Fourth Straight Shutout

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – It was a good day to take two as the Wilmington University softball team collected two more shutouts over Wheeling Jesuit, 9-0, and Stonehill, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at Osceola Field in Kissimmee, Florida.

Game One vs. Wheeling Jesuit:

The Wildcats (5-4) stayed hot as they had nine hits and did not strikeout to defeat Wheeling Jesuit 9-0 throughout six innings.

Sophomore Makayla McCarthy got things going for WilmU in the top of the second inning, hitting a double to right center to score Angela Antonini. The Wildcats would then get a bases loaded single down the left field line from Jazmeen Llamas to score give the Wildcats an early 3-0 lead. Rosa'Lynn Burton then got into the action with an RBI single to third base to make it a 4-0 ball game heading into the bottom half of the second.

WilmU didn't see much more action until the top of the fifth when senior first baseman Lexi Baughman hit her, and the Wildcats', first homerun of the season out to left center field, giving her three RBI in the 7-0 game.

In the top of the sixth, Alyssa Velasquez got into the action with the second homerun of the game, scoring her and Burton to give the Wildcats a 9-0 lead.

Makayla McCarthy went 6.0 innings, allowing only two hits and two walks with a season-high eight strikeouts. Rosa'Lynn Burton had two hits and one RBI as Jazmeen Llamas had two hits and two RBI for the Wildcats. Lexi Baughman's homerun gave her three RBI, along with Alyssa Velasquez who had two RBI. Five other Wildcats had at least one hit in the contest.

Game Two vs. Stonehill:

Another big hit game would help the Wildcats secure their fourth straight shutout against the Skyhawks, as they had 10 hits in the contest.

Stonehill would be the first to threaten in the game with a runner on third in the bottom of the second, but Caitlyn Whiteside was able to get the next two outs, including a strikeout to get the Wildcats out of the jam. The Skyhawks would also leave a runner in scoring position in the next two innings, but Whiteside would once again get out of each inning.

In the bottom of the fourth the Wildcats had runners in scoring position for Lauren Lopez to hit a single to right field and score two to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Llamas started another run for the Wildcats on a one out single down the left field line, before Alexis Sann reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth. Rosa'Lynn Burton would then hit her first triple of the season, scoring Sann, before Kiana Broderson-Jones singled through the left side to score Burton and give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.

WilmU would have runners in scoring position again in the bottom of the sixth, but was not able to score.

Caitlyn Whiteside went all seven innings allowing four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Burton, Broderson-Jones, Lopez, and Baughman all had two hits for the Wildcats. Alyssa Velasquez and Jazmeen Llamas each had one hit. Lopez had two RBI for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats have their last two games in Florida tomorrow as they take on Merrimack at 9:15 a.m. and No. 12 Saint Anselm at Osceola Complex.
