LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After a record breaking season, three Wilmington University softball student-athletes were named to the 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II All-Region Teams, which is conducted by NFCA member coaches in all eight regions.
After a dominating junior season, Rosa'Lynn Burton earned NFCA First Team East All-Region for the second time in her career. Burton finished the season first in the CACC and in the region batting .517. She is the only player throughout all three conferences to bat over .500 on the year. She also led the Region in stolen bases, going 60-60 on the year, breaking her own single-season record of 47. Her 60 stolen bases are 24 more than the Region's next highest number of stolen bases on the year with 36. The left fielder also led the region with 91 hits on the season, including five doubles, five triples, and one home run. Earlier in the season, she broke the programs all-time career hits of 201, and now stands with 266 career hits through her junior season. Burton also topped the Region with a .543 on-base percentage, and finished the season with a .619 slugging percentage.
Sophomore Lauren Lopez adds to her standout season, as she was tied for leading the region with 61 RBI this year. She broke the program's all-time RBI in a season with 51, and also broke the program's single-game record of eight RBI set back earlier in the season against Holy Family. In just two seasons in the program, she is now second all-time in program history with 101 RBI for her career, trailing Colby Wyatt, who totaled 112 RBI throughout 2014-17. The third baseman finished fourth in the CACC with 67 hits, including 17 doubles, one triple, and two homeruns on the season. She played in all 54 games for the Wildcats and finished 10th in the CACC batting .370, with a .389 on-base percentage, and a .508 slugging percentage.
This is the second consecutive year for sophomore Makyala McCarthy to earn the NFCA East All-Region honor, as she earned Second Team as a freshman last season. McCarthy finished third in the CACC with 18 wins in the circle this season, while putting up a 2.19 ERA. She also finished third in the CACC striking out 128 batters. In 134.0 IP, she allowed 106 hits, 43 earned runs, and 46 walks. The utility-pitcher also finished with 35 hits on the season, including six doubles, one triple, and two homeruns for 29 RBI. In her 114 at bats, she finished with a batting average of .307, with an on-base percentage of .374, and a slugging percentage of .430.
All honorees are now eligible for the selection to the 2019 NFCA Division II All-American teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 22 at the NCAA Division II National Championship Banquet in Denver, Colorado.
