Mike Shehorn was named the head coach of the softball program in August, 2013, and begins his seventh season at the helm of the Wildcats in 2020.

Shehorn has led the Wildcats to an unprecedented four-year stretch, winning two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships while reaching the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament in all four seasons from 2014-17. His team returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2019, this time becoming the first Wilmington team outside of golf to host an NCAA Regional Tournament. In six seasons as the head coach of the Wildcats, Shehorn is the all-time winningest coach in program history with a 206-120 overall record and 115-41 inside the CACC.

In 2019, Shehorn led the Wildcats to a 39-15 overall record, going 22-4 in CACC to earn the No. 2 seed. But the Wildcats needed to come out of the loser's bracket and did just that on the final day, winning three games to claim their third CACC Tournament Championship since 2014 with a 5-4 victory in 9 innings against Georgian Court. They then earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA East Regionanal Tournament and the chance to host the NCAA Division II East 2 Regional Tournament at Asbury Field.

In 2017, the Wildcats came up empty in the CACC Tournament as the fourth seed, but kept their postseason alive with a strong regular season schedule and earned the eighth and final spot into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament for the fourth straight year. The Wildcats dropped their first contest against top seeded and host Adelphi, but roared back to defeat New Haven and Mercy to reach the East Regional 1 final for the first time in program history. Their run came to an end against top seeded and host Adelphi once again, ending the year, 36-21 overall, making it the third straight year with 30+ victories.

in 2016, Shehorn got the team off to a hot start in CACC play, starting conference play with a 17-1 mark. The Wildcats finished third in the standings to earn the number three seed for the CACC Tournament with a 20-6 CACC record. The Wildcats marched through the CACC Tournament with a 4-0 mark, winning a pair of 1-0 games including the CACC Tournament Championship game over Holy Family. The win gave the Wildcats the CACC’s automatic qualification, making it three years in a row in which the team reached the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

In 2015, Shehorn again led the Wildcats into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament, earning the program’s first at-large bid and earning the fifth seed. The Wildcats went 34-18 overall in 2015, earning the third seed for the CACC Tournament before going 2-2. The Wildcats then went 1-2 in the East Regional Tournament. Shehorn coached senior pitcher Chelsea Botsch to All-American status, also coaching three players to All-Regional honors.

Shehorn led the Wildcats to their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship in program history in his first season, earning the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament in 2014. The Wildcats finished the season 29-26 overall, 16-10 in the CACC, earning the fifth seed for the CACC Tournament. The Wildcats went 1-2 in the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament, defeating New Haven before being eliminated.

Previously, Shehorn spent the 2013 season on staff as a volunteer assistant, helping the team to a program best 34-20 record, as well as a program record 19 wins in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The team earned the third seed for the CACC Tournament, going 2-2 with wins over Holy Family and USciences.

Prior to working as an assistant last season, Shehorn was the head softball coach at Caesar Rodney High School in Dover, Del., starting with the 2005 season. During his eight seasons at Caesar Rodney, Shehorn led his teams to a 93-70 overall record and two appearances in the Delaware State Semifinals. He was also named the state Coach of the Year in 2006.

Shehorn resides in Magnolia, Delaware with his wife Nicole and daughter, Skye.
