LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - A run to start the fourth quarter pushed Georgian Court past the Wilmington University women's basketball, 83-72, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division bout at the Wellness Center on Wednesday night.
Leading late in the third quarter, the Wildcats (6-21, 3-15 CACC) couldn't keep a hold of their two-point lead with 1:34 left in the third. Georgian Court (5-20, 3-15 CACC) scored the final four points of the third, and then continued the run into the fourth and final frame.
When it was all said and done, the Lions rattled off 16 consecutive points spanning the two quarters, taking an 80-62 with 3:56 remaining in regulation. Jadyn Whitsitt hit a three-pointer for the Wildcats to end the scoreless draught at 7:57 of game time.
The Wildcats jumped out quickly on the Lions, as Macy Robinson laid one home to give the visitors their largest lead of the night, 13-7, with 6:19 left in the first quarter. But the Lions fires back and exited the first quarter with a 23-20 lead.
Jadyn Whitsitt hit a couple of three-pointers late in the second quarter to bring the Wildcats to within 41-38, but the Lions had the final say with a layup, sending the home team into the locker room with a 43-38 lead.
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the third quarter, and Robinson tied the game at 45 with a three-pointer with 7:55 showing on the clock. Nyree Grant put he Wildcats in front, 51-49, with a layup with 4:58 to play in the third before Robinson tied the Wildcats' largest lead of the game, 55-49, with 3:27 left in the frame. The Lions fought back to tie the game at 56 with 2:03 to play before Robinson gave the Wildcats their last lead of the night with a pair from the foul line, 58-56, with 1:34 left.
That is when the Lions went on their 16-0 run to turn the game around.
Robinson led the Wildcats with 28 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the floor with three three-pointers. She added five rebounds, four steals, and two assists as well. Matthews added 13 points and four assists while Grant finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Whitsitt was the final Wildcat in double figures with 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Mikala Casimir led with five assists for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats wrap up their 2017-18 season with their final home game on Saturday, as they face crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom at the WU Athletics Complex in another CACC South Division showdown. Opening tip is set for 1:00 p.m.
