DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women's bowling team had its best showing of the year on Saturday, finishing second overall at the Bowl for the KUre hosted by Kutztown at the Jay Lanes Bowling.
The Wildcats also had their best individual performance at a tournament, as Leah Henry was named Tournament MVP for her combined play in the traditional and baker style matches. She averaged 181.33 in the three traditional matches, which was ninth best in the field, but led the tournament with a 21.6 average per baker frame.
The tournament started with three traditional matches, with the Wildcats going 2-1. They opened with a record setting match against St. Francis (NY), posting a team best 950 in a narrow, one-pin victory. The Wildcats then fell to Kutztown, 869-820, before bouncing back to defeat Molloy in the final traditional match, 845-760.
Bailey Peters led the Wildcats during the three traditional matches, shooting a 203-148-202 for 553 total pins and a 184.33 average; good enough for seventh place. Henry finished ninth in the traditional matches with a 189-188-167 for a total of 544 and a 181.33 average.
Malia Stout posted a new personal best with a 226 in the first match, following it up with a 171 and 137 for 534 total pins and a 178.00 average, sitting in 11th overall. Rachel Hirst shot a 172-170-160 for a 502 total, averaging 167.33 pins for a 15th place finish. Clare Chaffer rounded out the Wildcats with a 482 total, shooting a 160-143-179 for a 160.67 average and in 16th place.
The Wildcats then played two 10-game Baker matches, coming out on top over Chestnut Hill, 1810-1714, in the opener. They then posted their best ever Baker match against St. Thomas Aquinas, using their 251-baker game to spark a 1831-871 victory over the Spartans.
St. Francis (NY) whole the tournament by just seven pins over the Wildcats, 6263-6256. Kutztown placed third with 6249 pins while Chestnut Hill finished fourth with 6122 pins. Molloy was fifth with 6106 pins while St. Thomas Aquinas rounded out the tournament in sixth with 2945 pins.
The Wildcats head to another tournament hosted by Kutztown this weekend, as they will take part in the three-day Golden Bear Classic at the Berks Lane in Sinking Spring, Pa. The tournament will start on Friday and conclude on Sunday.
