NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team used a variety of scorers to get back Queens (N.Y.), 18-6, in its 2019 home opener on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.
Eighth different Wildcats (3-3) scored in the contest, led by Lashay Ross' five goals and two assists for a team high seven points. The Wildcats were also able to keep the offensive pressure on the Knights (0-2) throughout the majority of the contest by winning the draw control battle, 20-6, for the game, including 13-3 in the first half.
The Knights scored on the man advantage with 19:00 minutes left to bring the visitors to within 3-2, but the Wildcats answered with three straight goals and on a 5-1 run to take control of the contest. Brooke Siebert and Valerie Bragg scored on free position attempts to give the Wildcats a 6-2 lead before Ross and Maddie Day beat the goalkeeper to put the home team up 8-3 with 10:24 left in the first half.
After Queens scored to make it 8-4, the Wildcats ended the half by scoring the final three goals, getting a mark from Ross sandwiched around two goals from Alexis Miller to head into the break leading 11-4.
The teams traded the first two goals of the second half before the Wildcats put the game away with six straight goals to grab an 18-5 lead with 4:23 left in regulation.
