NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team never trailed but survived a late scare as it defeated its cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom, 3-2, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the WU Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats (8-6, 8-2 CACC) scored the game's first two goals and led 3-1 before holding on late as the Lightning (6-8, 4-6 CACC) attempted to tie the game.
The game-winner came off the foot of La'Dae Boykin in the 72nd minute, but it was back-to-back goals just 21 seconds apart in the first half that gave the Wildcats the momentum.
Center back Carin Essex-Arline made a long run from the back line and was rewarded with a ball into the box from Loran Wyrough. Essex-Arline was alone in on the keeper and slotted the ball home for her third goal of the season at the 31:31 mark.
Just 21 seconds later, Wyrough made it a 2-0 game, following up a long distance shot from Kellie MacIntosh. The senior's shot went off the crossbar and straight down, and Wyrough was there to head home the rebound, scoring her 14th goal of the season.
The Lightning were able to cut the deficit in half before the break, as Cliona Crammond converted a free-kick from 25 yards out, sneaking it home on the near post. The ball slipped through the hands of Wilmington netminder Kierstyn Williams and into the back of the net, keeping hope alive for the visitors.
Boykin gave the Wildcats breathing full in the second half, blasting home a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. She received a pass from the right side from Taylor Nelson to score her first goal of the season 71:06 into the match.
The Wildcats weren't out of the woods just yet, however, as the Lightning earned a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Amy Runciman converted the PK for her seventh goal of the year, bringing the visitors back to within a single goal. But the Lightning did not record another shot in the match, allowing the Wildcats to earn the victory.
Goldey-Beacom led in shots, 11-10, while both teams earned two corners. Williams kept the Wildcats in front with seven saves while the Lightning's Cindell Aguirre made two saves.
The Wildcats round out their regular season home schedule on Saturday, as they host Dominican for Senior Day. The women's team starts a CACC doubleheader with a contest at 12:00 p.m.
