NEWARK, Del. – Every set was a close one, but the Wilmington University volleyball team came out on top every time as they beat Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division foe Chestnut Hill College, 3-0, at the WU Athletic Complex Tuesday night.
Set scores for the Wildcats were 25-18, 25-17, and 25-19.
The Griffins (5-15, 3-8 CACC) went on a 6-0 run to lead the Wildcats (15-9, 9-3 CACC) 11-7 in the first set but Wilmington came right back with their own 6-0 run to take the lead, 13-11. A Griffins' kill by Mykala Milching would tie the game at 13 a piece but the Wildcats would go on another 5-0 run to increase their lead and take the set, 25-18.
The second set was not much different as both teams rallied point for point until three consecutive errors by the Griffins gave the Wildcats a 15-14 lead. WilmU would go on a 4-0 run off of two more errors by the Griffins to increase their lead to 22-15 and finish out the set on a ball handling error by the Griffins to take the set, 25-17.
With the game tied at 18 a piece in the third set, the Wildcats were able to pull away from the Griffins from three errors from Chestnut Hill and back-to-back kills by Bailey Andrews and Jill Braunsberg to take a 22-18 lead. Juliana Testa came into the game and served up an ace on match point to give the Wildcats the third set, 25-19.
Bailey Andrews led all hitters with 12 kills for a .423 hitting percentage, with Mandy Behiels adding seven kills and nine digs. Jill Braunsberg had her 15th double-double of the season as she dished out 15 assists and 12 digs.
The Wildcats capitalized off of Chestnut Hill's 24 hitting errors, including their .000 hitting percentage in the second set, 10 service errors, and seven reception errors in the match.
Up next the Wildcats travel to cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom on Saturday for a 12 p.m. start time inside the Joseph West Jones Center.
